The East Bay Express has just voted HOT FOR TEACHER the best cover act or tribute band in the San Francisco Bay Area.

There are cover bands and then there are tribute bands. The East Bay's Hot for Teacher, formed in 1999 to pay homage to the classic David Lee Roth era of Van Halen, features not only old-school music but is fronted by an actual teacher, hence the name. The wildly entertaining singer Randy Monroe, a middle-school science teacher by day, pours much energy and enthusiasm into becoming Roth. Along with guitarist Jude Gold, bassist Jesse Scott, and drummer Eddie Studebaker, Monroe and co. take their act on the road quite often, due to demand. Hot for Teacher has played most of the Western US and has upcoming shows from San Francisco to Montana. The next time the urge strikes to hear "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" or "Runnin' With the Devil" live, and if you like VH but prefer to skip the Sammy Hagar years, a trip to see HFT is in order.

Party animals - With David Lee Roth front and center, the 'new' Van Halen rocks like in the good old days

"It's very challenging music, and it also has really good hooks and grooves at the same time," says Randy Monroe, vocalist for Hot for Teacher, a California-based Van Halen tribute band. "I think it just appeals to people because it's good, happy, party rock. It's all about having fun, that's a big part of it."

HOT FOR TEACHER's vocalist and award-winning science teacher Randy Monroe is featured in the Department of Energy's Joint Genome Institute publication called The Primer, "Rock Star Educator Spends Summer at JGI".

Since the article was written, Randy has continued to study these novel "critters" and has been made an official part of the JGI Microbial Ecology Team as an adjunct faculty member.

With three jobs and a family, do you think the guy has enough to do?

Randy responds, "As David Lee Roth says, 'I am looking to the future, not the pasture' and as Sammy Hagar says, 'Are we having fun yet'? I love all the opportunities and both new and old friends that allow me to grow professionally as a Scientist, Science Teacher, and Musician. Ain't life cool"?

Randy Monroe is going to Pluto!

Well, not exactly, but close enough. Randy is traveling to Cape Canaveral in Florida next week to participate in the launch of New Horizons, a space probe headed for Pluto.

You can say Randy has a personal connection with the probe since his stepfather, James Christy, discovered Pluto's moon in 1978 and named it after his mother, Charon.

The Official HOT FOR TEACHER Forum Re: REDWOOD CITY ROCKS!!!!!!

Thanks for the compliments, much appreciated."I had a positively raging time playing with HFT". Thanks for suggesting me to Randy when Tyrannosaurus Terry got hired for the big Europe tour with Heathen.

"It was an absolute pleasure playing those roller coaster riffs with a band that can handle all the twists and turns". Aaron (Leigh -HFT bassist 5/05-12/05) and Chris (Kontos-HFT drummer 5/05-9/05; Spiralarms - Present), you guys are truly amazing.

And, not to kiss up to the boss, but I hope everybody who never saw Roth-era Van Halen realizes what a treat Randy's giving you -- he's actually SINGING the songs, and he's singing them with same or more volcanic intensity than the original album versions. That's a LOT more than DLR, god bless him, ever used to do or does at live shows. And to be in a room full of true Van Halen fans like that, was like going to church for me. "I've always been a huge VH fan; now I'm also an HFT fan".

to quote Steve Perry, "....ooh oooh, anytime that ya need me..."

cheers all,

Jude

Article appears in the September issue of FHM Magazine (Anna Kournikova is on the cover). Subject: David Lee Roth. Within the article there is a section with questions from Van Halen Tribute Bands. One of the questions is directed to HFT vocalist Randy Monroe. The magazine contacted HFT about 3 months ago and wanted to know if we had any questions for DLR. Randy called Terry (HFT guitarist) and wanted to know what he should ask, so Terry said to have them ask about tribute bands copying Van Halen. And sure enough, the question ended up in the magazine! There are questions from other VH Tribute Bands as well. There is also a picture of Randy. Let us know if any of y'all see it. So, check it out!
